Annual STOREP symposium in the Review of Political Economy

Webpage

This Special Issue brings together selected contributions from the 20th STOREP Conference, held in Bari, Italy, from June 15–17, 2023. Hosted by the Department of Political Sciences at the University of Bari, the conference addressed the theme, ‘Rethinking Economic Policies: The Role of the State in the Post-Covid-19’ offering a critical and interdisciplinary forum for reflecting on contemporary economic challenges and the role of public policy in addressing them. Preceded by Young Scholars Initiative (YSI) events, the conference underscored its commitment to fostering new generations of critical thinkers in economic thought.

The 2023 edition of the conference was particularly timely, as the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic and the ongoing repercussions of the Russia-Ukraine war have prompted a re-evaluation of the State’s role in economic governance. These crises revealed the limitations of pre-crisis policy frameworks and called for a bold rethinking of public intervention, encompassing welfare systems, industrial policies, and labour market regulations. The 20th STOREP Conference fostered a vibrant discussion among scholars, highlighting how these unprecedented shocks have prompted governments and institutions to reconsider public policies, focusing on fostering inclusive growth, addressing labour market fragmentation, tackling inflation, and mitigating territorial disparities. By integrating historical perspectives and contemporary analyses, the discussions in the conference critically assess the evolving role of the State in economic policy, questioning whether current interventions signify a paradigm shift or merely a continuation of the status quo [from the Introduction to the Symposium].
