When we started there were not even the Millennium Goals, but it was clear to all of us that the empowerment of women and men is the core of sustainable human development along this path. It was clear to all of us that academia alone was not enough for the task, the partnership between the University of Pavia, the University Institute of Advanced Studies (IUSS), and the NGOs CISP, COOPI, and VIS started from the belief that development studies and training require cooperation.
Over the years new academic partners in Colombia, Palestine, Kenya, and Nepal have established master programs similar to the Pavia one: this is the Cooperation and Development Network.
Now we have the Sustainable Development Goals and it is clear that natural resources are a legacy we all must take care of: People and Planet can only progress together.
The 25° anniversary meeting intends to bring together former students to share a few thoughts on the road ahead: toward sustainable human development. This broad theme will be articulated into two main lines.
First, we are approaching the mid-term of Agenda 2030 and the SDGs and in a few years, the debate will enter the decisive phase of what’s next? What is a provisional balance? Achievements and failures? Temporary lessons learned?
Second, SDG 17 is about global partnership for sustainable development and partnership is at the core of our experience. We all know how complicated can be to implement an effective and efficient partnership in projects and programs, which really improves on empowerment and ownership of human beings. At the same time, the world is becoming more and more complex and partnership is the main challenge in front of all of us: in economics, politics, and of course development cooperation.
Dear friends, if you wish to contribute to the meeting please focus on one SDG and briefly examine it following the two above tracks. The experience of each one of you is a valuable starting point, but do not just describe it. We are interested in the person that you have become and your thoughts on the road ahead and on how the partnership could be improved. Focusing on one SDG might help.
Contributions will be brief and we do not have to reach any conclusion; we want to share thoughts and feelings among friends who share the passion for sustainable human development and want to celebrate 25 years of staying and thinking together.
