What is power? Different regimes of political organization do indeed exist, among them regimes in which power, though it manifests itself everywhere, is nonetheless noncoercive, not submissive to the State model. What matters most, Clastres explains, is that these regimes, characterizing primitive societies, actively avoid the State model: they are\u00a0<em>societies against the state<\/em>. How could our modern societies, adopting the State model, ever have arisen from those \u201cagainst the state\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>Addressing those crucial questions, Clastres made a revolutionary contribution that never stopped arousing controversies. The modernity and topicality of this classic work lie not only in his foundation of a new Political Anthropology but, more generally, in his contribution to human sciences from a philosophical and political point of view. Clastres thought that in dealing with those questions, \u201cethnology would have to be broad enough in scope to meet the requirements of a general theory \u2026 of society and history\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>On the occasion of the\u00a0<b>50th\u00a0anniversary<\/b>,\u00a0the\u00a0<em>Annals of the Fondazione Luigi Einaudi. An Interdisciplinary Journal of Economics, History and Political Science<\/em>\u00a0will host an issue on\u00a0Pierre Clastres,\u00a0<em>La Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 contre l\u2019\u00c9tat<\/em>\u00a0(\u201ca Semi-centenary Estimate\u201d), to be published in\u00a0an upcoming issue of the Journal.<\/p>\n<p><b>Possible topics<\/b>\u00a0include, but are not restricted to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The genesis of\u00a0<em>La Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 contre l\u2019\u00c9tat<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Clastres and the masters who influenced his intellectual formation<\/li>\n<li>Clastres, Montaigne and Labo\u00e9tie<\/li>\n<li>Clastres and the structuralism<\/li>\n<li>Clastres and his dialogue with philosophers<\/li>\n<li>Clastres\u2019 fieldwork in South America<\/li>\n<li>Clastres\u2019 legacy<\/li>\n<li>Clastres and the Anarchist anthropology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The special issue will include invited articles by leading scholars in anthropology and other human sciences\u00a0and peer-reviewed works received through this call for papers.
