The “Raffaelli lecture” is in honour of Tiziano Raffaelli, Full professor of History of Economic Thought at the University of Pisa, an internationally renowned specialist of Alfred Marshall’s economics, a promoter of several research initiatives of political economy, and an active and reputable member of STOREP. Starting from the 14th Annual STOREP Conference, and thanks to the generosity of Manuela Giovannetti, full professor at the University of Pisa and widow of Tiziano Raffaelli, STOREP invites every year an internationally recognized scholar who has led innovative research on Raffaelli’s main interests – from Alfred Marshall’s thought, in particular, to, more generally, industrial economics, evolutionary economics, economic methodology) to hold a one-hour lecture to participants in the main conference. STOREP will broadly disseminate the lecture contents, both on its website and on social media, and eventually on special issues of academic journals with selected articles presented in the Annual Conference.
Harro Maas will give the STOREP 2018 “Raffaelli Lecture”. Formerly an Associate professor in the University of Amsterdam and then in the Utrecht School of Economics, Harro Maas is now a Full professor in the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences of the University of Lausanne and in the Walras-Pareto Centre. A renowned scholar specialized in the history of economic thought and economic methodology, Maas is the recipient of the 2006 Joseph J. Spengler Best Book Award of the History of Economics Society, for his volume on William Stanley Jevons and the Making of Modern Economics (Cambridge University Press, 2005).
He is currently editor of the Cambridge University Press series “Historical Perspectives on Modern Economics” and a member of the editorial boards of Oeconomia-History/Methodology/Philosophy, the Journal of the History of Economic Thought, and the Journal of Economic Methodology.
Among his publications are The Making of Experimental Economics: Witness Seminar on the Emergence of a Field (coedited with M. Svorenčík, Springer, 2016) and Economic Methodology: A Historical Introduction (Routledge, 2014). He has also edited, together with Mary Morgan, the Annual Supplement (44) of History of Political Economy “Observing the Economy: Historical Perspectives” (Duke University Press 2012).
The title of his keynote lecture at the 15th Annual STOREP Conference is: “Marshall’s Struggles with History: The Red Book in Historical Perspective“.
